The weltwärts programme
Introducing the development volunteer service
The weltwärts development volunteer service is a success. Since weltwärts was launched in 2008 by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), around 40,000 volunteers have gone abroad. They get involved in a development project and take away experiences that stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Besides the volunteers, the main players in weltwärts are the around 160 active sending organisations and the many partner organisations in the host countries. They implement the programme in close cooperation and play a key part in shaping it.
Since 2012 weltwärts has been brought together with other institutions, programmes and initiatives active in development education in Germany under the umbrella of Engagement Global gGmbH. Engagement Global passes the funding on to the sending organisations and advises them on implementing the programme.
